Home Inspections OKC Warns Of Termites: The Silent Destroyers

Home Inspections OKC: Worried About Termites?

Termites are insects that have, reportedly, been around since the time of dinosaurs and seeing as how they’re from the cockroach family (called Blattodea) it may be easy to understand why they’ve survived so long. As we’ve come to learn in our Home Inspections OKC and pest control business, there are several species of termites that vary in size and have slightly different habitats, but the commonality is their love of eating wood.

Termites are commonly known to be silent destroyers as most homeowners don’t notice the damage happening until it’s often far too late. The reason it’s so difficult to know if you have a termite problem right away is due to the fact that these insects generally work within the inner walls of a structure.

The damage termites can do is astronomical and in most cases it’s more than most homeowners can handle. In fact, it is estimated that each year, termites and similar pests cause an estimated $30 billion in damage to man-made structures in the U.S. Furthermore, a homeowner who discovers termite damage will spend an average of $3,000 to repair the damage.

Here’s a little information from our Home Inspections OKC and pest control team about various types of termites:

  • Dampwood Termites: They live near damp, dying wood which they’ll eat on or they’ll survive in homes with leaky plumbing that keeps wood wet.
  • Drywood Termites: They’ll live in dry wood areas and eat up dry wood, wallpaper, plastics, and fabrics made from plants.
  • Formosan Termites: They generally live underground, build mud nests inside walls, live on boats and in buildings. They’ll eat wood and fabric made from plants.
  • Subterranean Termites: They need contact with soil to survive and will live underground, or in wet areas aboveground. They’re the most destructive type of termite and will eat wood, wallpaper, plastics, and fabrics made from plants.

You can try to keep an eye out for signs of termites yourself if you wish.

Here’s some tips from our Home Inspections OKC and pest control team on how to identify them:

The termite workers are pale, soft-bodied insects about one-quarter of an inch or less in length. At first glance they may appear as white ants, but aren’t actually shaped the same. You may be able to find dead termites or their wings near windows, heating vents, doors, sinks and bathtubs.

Another sign of termites would be mud tubes which are about the size of a straw in width. They would most likely appear near cracks, beneath flooring, around baseboards, on pipes, piers, chimneys, behind siding, plumbing and other fixtures. Another way to check for termites is by tapping along walls, baseboards, and windowsills in your home to see if there are any damaged, hollow spot of wood.
