Home Inspections OKC Warns Of Termites: The Silent Destroyers

Home Inspections OKC: Worried About Termites?

Termites are insects that have, reportedly, been around since the time of dinosaurs and seeing as how they’re from the cockroach family (called Blattodea) it may be easy to understand why they’ve survived so long. As we’ve come to learn in our Home Inspections OKC and pest control business, there are several species of termites that vary in size and have slightly different habitats, but the commonality is their love of eating wood.

Termites are commonly known to be silent destroyers as most homeowners don’t notice the damage happening until it’s often far too late. The reason it’s so difficult to know if you have a termite problem right away is due to the fact that these insects generally work within the inner walls of a structure.

The damage termites can do is astronomical and in most cases it’s more than most homeowners can handle. In fact, it is estimated that each year, termites and similar pests cause an estimated $30 billion in damage to man-made structures in the U.S. Furthermore, a homeowner who discovers termite damage will spend an average of $3,000 to repair the damage.

Here’s a little information from our Home Inspections OKC and pest control team about various types of termites:

  • Dampwood Termites: They live near damp, dying wood which they’ll eat on or they’ll survive in homes with leaky plumbing that keeps wood wet.
  • Drywood Termites: They’ll live in dry wood areas and eat up dry wood, wallpaper, plastics, and fabrics made from plants.
  • Formosan Termites: They generally live underground, build mud nests inside walls, live on boats and in buildings. They’ll eat wood and fabric made from plants.
  • Subterranean Termites: They need contact with soil to survive and will live underground, or in wet areas aboveground. They’re the most destructive type of termite and will eat wood, wallpaper, plastics, and fabrics made from plants.

You can try to keep an eye out for signs of termites yourself if you wish.

Here’s some tips from our Home Inspections OKC and pest control team on how to identify them:

The termite workers are pale, soft-bodied insects about one-quarter of an inch or less in length. At first glance they may appear as white ants, but aren’t actually shaped the same. You may be able to find dead termites or their wings near windows, heating vents, doors, sinks and bathtubs.

Another sign of termites would be mud tubes which are about the size of a straw in width. They would most likely appear near cracks, beneath flooring, around baseboards, on pipes, piers, chimneys, behind siding, plumbing and other fixtures. Another way to check for termites is by tapping along walls, baseboards, and windowsills in your home to see if there are any damaged, hollow spot of wood.

If you suspect you have termites or just wanted to be 100% sure without second guessing, please feel free to give us a call. Sharp Shooter Home Inspections OKC (and pest control services) would be glad to make sure your home is termite free!

Home Inspections OKC: Why Worry About Ice Damming?

Home Inspections OKC: Keeping homeowners informed

We’ve had a slower start to the winter than in previous years, but that doesn’t mean that the ice storms aren’t coming and when they do you’re going to want to be prepared. When icicles start forming they may not seem like that big of a deal, but to a trained eye like someone at Sharp Shooter Home Inspections OKC, we know it can be pretty significant for your roof. If we see ice dangling from the roof we start checking for ice damming.

Home Inspections OKC can tell you that ice damming is a common occurrence in Oklahoma when homes don’t have proper attic ventilation. As a result of improper air flow, warmer areas in the attic causes snow to melt despite the colder outside temperatures. Then, the melted snow becomes ice which accumulates at the edge of the roof near the gutters or soffit creating a wall.

The problem that ice damming creates is water build up as more snow, ice, and rain comes in behind the ice dam. The pool of water becomes too heavy for the roof and can start to leak inside the home. Of course, Home Inspections OKC probably doesn’t have to tell you that leakage in the home isn’t ideal, but just know that if water is allowed to leak into a home for too long it can create damage on the walls, ceilings, insulation, floors and more.

Of course, safety is number one in our book. As your Home Inspections OKC expert we have to tell you that performing ice damming removal alone is very risky if not done properly. To avoid personal injury, we warn homeowners to never walk on a snow covered roof!

It is highly suggested that you contact professionals with the proper equipment and roofing experience to do this for you. If ice damming is an issue for your roof, you may consider looking into getting some proper attic ventilation for the future, as well.

If you’re selling your home, or buying one, and you would like to know more about Home Inspections OKC services or whether or not you have ice damming issues please don’t hesitate to give me a call!

Home Inspections OKC: Protecting your bedding

Sharp Shooter Home Inspections OKC is ready for the holiday season. Are you? We all know that the holidays are supposed to be a special time spent laughing and having a great time with friends and family. There are multiple family members coming and going in many households and a lot of sleepovers will be had. The last thing anyone wants is to find out that they’ve allowed their beds have been infested with bed bugs causing their guests to be feasted on. Likewise, did you know that guests can actually bring bed bugs with them?

You may think bed bugs aren’t as common now as they once were, but Home Inspections OKC is here to tell you they’ve made a return! Older generations will remember they were a common occurrence before World War II in the United States and the epidemic seemed to eliminated for quite some time, but records indicate bed bugs remained prevalent in other areas of the world and that increases in immigration, travel, and restrictions on stronger pesticides have played a role in the comeback of these nasty little critters.

Bed bugs can be identified as being reddish brown in color and even more reddish after they’ve feasted on the blood of humans or animals. They may be difficult to find as they are very good at hiding in beds, dark areas, in luggage, and on clothing. While they might not be visible, they do leave behind evidence of their existence. Here’s a few tips from our Home Inspections OKC team on what to look out for:

  • Bug skins or shells
  • Egg cases
  • Fecal stains on mattress, sheets, blankets, or pillows
  • Blood stains on sheets or pajamas
  • Sometimes a musty odor

You may also notice rash-like patches of red blotchy skin around the face, neck, back, hands, and arms. If scratched, the bites can become infected and typically, there are no treatment options unless infections does set in. Bed bugs can transmit Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease, one of the most prevalent and deadly diseases in the Americas.

As you will come to realize through research of your own, getting rid of bed bugs is not an easy process. Each adult female produces about one egg per day and each egg takes 10 days to hatch. Furthermore, it only takes another five to six weeks for the offspring to develop into an adult and be ready to procreate.
