Home Inspections OKC & Pest Control For Fall Preparation

Rain Making Way For Interesting Home Inspections & Pest Control Needs

Have you wondered why there are still so many pesky bugs still active at this time of the year? Our pest control and home inspections OKC team knows that during warm spring and summer months the ants, flies, wasps, spiders, and other creepy bugs have something in common; they need time to reproduce! The reason you usually start to see more pests in warmer months is because they’ve had more time to lay enough eggs and potentially produce thousands of babies. With Oklahoma’s crazy weather this year ranging from wet, damp, rainy days all the way to the extremely and unusually warm days in between it’s no wonder the fluctuating temperatures made the perfect “storm” for incubating a staggering amount of reproduction for various insect species.

Did you know it only takes one burst of wet weather, for example, to create a breeding ground for flies? The astonishing part is that flies have the capability of laying up to 900 eggs! The offspring can then hang around for nearly a month afterwards. Annoying, right? If you’ve seen an increase in flies around your home in the last few weeks, it could be a result of rainy days all the way back from the beginning of August. On the other hand, many bugs start to make their way out of their resting places when temperatures become more stable and when weeds, flowers, and grass are still alive to help the insects have places to hide and feast.

This is why after the rainy month of August, the many bugs that usually are gone by early September have stuck around. With that being said, our home inspections OKC team have a little more to look our for when we look at a home for a customer as we have to watch for standing water or places that promote even more breeding of insects. That also means that our pest control side of the business is still in full action!

As we continue to stay relatively busy this season to ward off the bugs of the last season, we’re also going to be preparing our customers for the fall. If you’re in need of assistance with checking out a home you might want to purchase, please schedule your appointment with our home inspections OKC team as soon as possible to secure a spot.

Home Inspections OKC Warns Of Termites: The Silent Destroyers

Home Inspections OKC: Worried About Termites?

Termites are insects that have, reportedly, been around since the time of dinosaurs and seeing as how they’re from the cockroach family (called Blattodea) it may be easy to understand why they’ve survived so long. As we’ve come to learn in our Home Inspections OKC and pest control business, there are several species of termites that vary in size and have slightly different habitats, but the commonality is their love of eating wood.

Termites are commonly known to be silent destroyers as most homeowners don’t notice the damage happening until it’s often far too late. The reason it’s so difficult to know if you have a termite problem right away is due to the fact that these insects generally work within the inner walls of a structure.

The damage termites can do is astronomical and in most cases it’s more than most homeowners can handle. In fact, it is estimated that each year, termites and similar pests cause an estimated $30 billion in damage to man-made structures in the U.S. Furthermore, a homeowner who discovers termite damage will spend an average of $3,000 to repair the damage.

Here’s a little information from our Home Inspections OKC and pest control team about various types of termites:

  • Dampwood Termites: They live near damp, dying wood which they’ll eat on or they’ll survive in homes with leaky plumbing that keeps wood wet.
  • Drywood Termites: They’ll live in dry wood areas and eat up dry wood, wallpaper, plastics, and fabrics made from plants.
  • Formosan Termites: They generally live underground, build mud nests inside walls, live on boats and in buildings. They’ll eat wood and fabric made from plants.
  • Subterranean Termites: They need contact with soil to survive and will live underground, or in wet areas aboveground. They’re the most destructive type of termite and will eat wood, wallpaper, plastics, and fabrics made from plants.

You can try to keep an eye out for signs of termites yourself if you wish.

Here’s some tips from our Home Inspections OKC and pest control team on how to identify them:

The termite workers are pale, soft-bodied insects about one-quarter of an inch or less in length. At first glance they may appear as white ants, but aren’t actually shaped the same. You may be able to find dead termites or their wings near windows, heating vents, doors, sinks and bathtubs.

Another sign of termites would be mud tubes which are about the size of a straw in width. They would most likely appear near cracks, beneath flooring, around baseboards, on pipes, piers, chimneys, behind siding, plumbing and other fixtures. Another way to check for termites is by tapping along walls, baseboards, and windowsills in your home to see if there are any damaged, hollow spot of wood.

If you suspect you have termites or just wanted to be 100% sure without second guessing, please feel free to give us a call. Sharp Shooter Home Inspections OKC (and pest control services) would be glad to make sure your home is termite free!
